Andrew Gordon selected for Commonwealth Games
Congratulations to Andrew Gordon, a Woking Masters Swimmer, who has been selected to compete in the Commonwealth Games representing Gibraltar, taking place in Birmingham at the end of July. The triathlon event itself will take place on July 29th and 31st at Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield.
‘Growing up in Gibraltar, sport has always been a big part of my life. I took up triathlon 10 years ago as it’s easier to fit training in around work (even though it meant learning how to swim!). We know nothing worth having comes easy, and – as I remind myself at the start of each session Seb throws our way – everything is impossible until it’s done; triathlon (like swimming) demands a great deal of sacrifice and grit, but personally, I wouldn’t change a thing.
I love to compete and it helps balance the demands of a hectic work life. I train between 10-15 hours a week, and the focus on each discipline varies depending on the type of race I’m preparing for. Joining Woking SC has made a huge difference to my swimming, and I owe it to the team for pushing me to this level’

Triathlon at the Games
Despite only being ‘invented’ in the 1970s, triathlon has quickly risen in popularity, securing its status as one of the world’s most iconic endurance events. Triathlon requires its competitors to become masters of three very different endurance disciplines, making it one of the most physically demanding events in world sport.
The race begins with an open water swim and transitions into a cycle ride, before finishing with a lung busting run to the end. The first across the finish line wins.
Gold Coast 2018’s triathlon was contested at the ‘sprint distance’ of a 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run. This fast and frenetic version of the event will be retained at Birmingham 2022, ensuring maximum excitement for spectators
