Surrey Age Group Champs 2nd Weekend Report
The second weekend on the Annual Surrey County championships started with Woking
in close second with other clubs right behind us. We were determined to work hard to
maintain our position.
Session 1
The swimming started with an incredible performance from the U12 girls with Ellie
Macleod (1.17.29), Francesca Johnson (1.18.58) and Eva Selden (1.22.06) placing 1st,
2nd and 3rd to reach the final. 100 fly was flooded with Woking talent with 10 swimmers
competing in the event. Though this wasn’t enough for our girls as 9 of them did enough
to qualify for the final later that session.
The boys then continued into the 100 back with both Ryan and Daniel Turner swimming
hard to make into their first final of the weekend qualifying 5th (1.15.18) and 8th
(1.08.13) respectively.
The 200 IM was next which saw Ellie Macleod winning her first Gold of the weekend in
a time of 2.45.13. Other notable swims consist of Lucy wheeler (2.44.11) going 6
seconds faster than her entry time and Sophie King (2.28.60) picking up her first medal
of the weekend with a Silver.
The tough 200 fly saw 4 boys competing with all 4 swimming PBs and improving their
overall position from their original seed with Takara Hasegawa-York (3.19.00) and Neco
Truter (2.43.13) finishing 5th, Ryan Turner (2.55.92) picking up a Bronze and Joshua
Hutchinson (3.02.49) a Silver.
An outstanding 11 swimmers competed in the finals of the 1st session of the weekend.
The first for Woking was the ever impressive 12YO girls, Ellie Macleod picking up Gold
(1.15.61), Francesca Johnson (1.18.58) picking up Silver and Eva Selden (1.20.29)
doing an outstanding job to fight off some incredibly tough competition to take home the
Bronze. A really exciting race to watch and a huge achievement for the girls to fill the
podium. Tegan Gale (1.08.66) and Abi Elford (1.09.88) fed off their success by picking
up a Silver and Bronze respectively while Sadie Warmington (1.08.51) picked up a
Bronze medal in her 16YO category to finish the 100 fly with an outstanding 6 medals
for Woking.
Session 2
The first 50M events of the weekend began with the Girls 50 Breaststroke. Lucy
Wheeler swum to qualify 2nd with a 37.43. Isla Hanif swum a personal best swimming
0.69 faster than her best to qualify for the 14YO final with a 39.25. Sophie King follows
suit to qualify 3rd going into the final. The Boys followed with the 50 back with the
Turner brothers again stepping up to make their respective finals, ranked 6th for Ryan
and 8th for Daniel.
From 1 length of the pool to 30 we moved to the girls 1500. 6 swimmers braved the long
freestyle slog, with all 6 gaining top 8 finishes with Harriet Larwood in her first County
qualification picking up a Bronze medal (20.09.40). But it was Elie Macleod, continuing
her form with a Gold medal in her age group with a 34 sec PB, who took the limelight
with a 19.34.55 in the 12YO age group and picking up a club record in the process.
Boys 400 IM then followed. Josh Hutchinson winning Gold and picking up a Club record
in the process for the boys U12 event with a 5.54.78. An outstanding achievement in
itself especially considering how busy Josh was over the weekend with 9 swims over
the course of the weekend with 200 fly, 400 IM and 800 free to name a few.
The girls finals finished with Lucy Wheeler picking up a Silver medal (37.00) and Sophie
King picking up a Bronze medal (34.10).
Session 3
The Girls 100 free consisted of 9 girls with 7 doing enough to make the final. Francesca
Johnson (1.09.14), Ellie Macleod (1.10.19) and Eva Sedlen (1.10.09) were at it again
making the final for the 12YO age group. Sadie Warmington and Rita Luzan qualify
equal 4th place into the final for the 16YO age group with a 1.02.43.
Joshua Hutchinson (1.15.19), Ryan Turner (1.18.92) and Neco Truter (1.08.68) did well
to make finals in the 100 fly, all three achieving huge pbs.
200 fly for the girls saw Ellie Macleod again swimming outstandingly to win Gold, Verity
Larwood having a really gutsy swim to gain a huge pb and pick up a Bronze with a
2.53.77. Abi Elford swum hard to also pick up a Bronze medal (2.41.55) and a Shout out
to Millie Hart-Johnson swimming hard to finish 9th in her first County qualified event.
The boys 200 IM saw Joshua Hutchinson gaining another Gold medal with a huge
improvement with a time of 2.47.01.
Another great turn out for Woking in the finals of the final morning of Counties to see
Francesca Johnson picking up a Bronze medal. Neco Truter swum in his first county
final to maintain his 4th place position only 0.2sec of a Bronze medal.
Session 4
It was a huge turnout for the 50 fly with 16 swimmers competing in the event with 9 PBs
and 9 swimmers making finals. Alex Platt was outstanding to improve her ranking by 13
places to finish 9th, just outside making a final. Violette Hornzee surprised even herself
by improving her ranking by 14 places to make it into the final ranked 5th. Izzy Rose
swum well to join Violette in the 14YO final with Tegan entering the final in 3rd.
Isabella Diedericks competed in her 1st ever County championships with the 200 back
gaining huge experience finishing 9th. Sisters Violette and Bella Hornzee both took
home Gold in their respective age groups in hotly contested events, with Sadie
Warmington picking up the Silver alongside Bella in the 16YO age group.
The 400 free saw the final swim for Abby Whittaker in her first ever County
championships with an impressive 6 events, a great achievement for the 11YO. She
managed 11.99 second improvement from her entry time achieving a solid 5.52.19
finishing a solid 6th. Ellie Macleod finished her medal collection of the weekend with
another Gold medal in the 400 free.
The last set of finals consisted of the boys 50 free and the girls 50 fly. Woking again
were well represented with 11 swimmers competing. Joshua Hutchinson and Ryan
Turner were in for the boys with Joshua picking up a Silver while Ryan picked up yet
another Gold, completing an outstanding achievement of picking up Gold in all freestyle
events except one in which he picked up a Silver medal. Joshua picked up a Silver
medal in his age group to compete his 11 medal haul. Francesca Johnson picked up
Gold with Tegan and Sophie picking up the Bronze in the 50 fly.
All the coaches at Woking swimming club were truly impressed and proud of the
performances at this year’s County Championships and we certainly feel all the hard
work is paying off through our results. Woking finished 2nd in the medals table with a
total of 25 Gold, 14 Silver and 20 Bronze. We also finished 2nd in the points table with a
total of 686.5 points, over 100 points from our nearest competitor.
On top of this we had swimmers involved in their first ever counties, swimmers
qualifying for their first ever finals and swimmers picking up their first ever medals. It
was great to see Woking representatives in multiple sessions in multiple range of events
in both girls and boys. We were especially impressed with the rate of swimmers who
swum faster in finals showing how maturely our swimmers handled the pressure of a final
and stepped up when needed to.
A huge thank you to all parents, officials and volunteers who help make these events
possible and support the development of Woking SC.
