Throughout the country, last night, 10,000 swimmers in 302 teams at 51 galas and over 1,000 officials were all set to take part in Round 1 of the prestigious National Arena League. The Arena League is swum in three rounds during October, November and December with winners of each region swimming in finals in April next year. This marks one of the most exciting events in all swimming club calendars and sees many swimmers travelling from far afield for the honour of competing for their club.
Woking’s first round saw an excited group of swimmers (and even more excited coaches and team managers!) make their way to Oxford for the first round.
Woking knew that they were swimming among some of the best teams in the league, and thus ‘fast gutsy swimming’ was in order. The swimmers did not disappoint.
The very strong teams of Oxford and Sevenoaks were soon in a clear battle for 1st and 2nd place, and Woking quickly knew their own battle was to hold 4th place and try and aim for 3rd. With every point counting, all swimmers fought hard and produced some amazing swims in a truly great Woking team spirit.
Woking started to pull clear into 4th place and were delighted to hold on with some great relay swimming from all age groups. The highlight of the night is always the 6 x 50m womens and then mens squadron relay, and once again Woking senior swimmers delighted the cheering team and crowd with a great 2nd place (women’s) and 1st place (men’s) place. The final scores on the night were:
|City of Oxford||242|
|Guildford City B||137|
Swimmers of the night were Sophie King and Alex Smith, but all swimmers were commended for their great team spirit and gutsy swimming.
Woking now await the destination of Round two gala.
Keep the date free for Round 2, on Saturday 11th November and Round 3, on Saturday 9th December!
