Rother League Round 2

The second round of the Rother League took place on Saturday 25th June. This was a gala with all events other than two (IM's for the Under 14's) being relays.
Woking travelled to Bracknell to meet Haslemere, Alton, Hart, Rushmore and the home team.
The Girls Under 14 team (Kirsten Panter, Bethany Eastwood, Naomi Thrower, Jo Blair, Becky Harding and Amy Edmonds) notched up 4 out of 4 firsts in the 2x1 relays and also came first in the Medley 4x1 and second in the Freestyle 4x1. Good performances from the Breaststroke pairing of Becky and Amy gave the girls first place in the Under 14's and the Under 16's with a credible third place in the Open 2x2 relay.

Further good performances from the Under 12 boys (Josh Foulkes, Dominic Holloway, Daniel West - answering a very last minute call-up - , William Killen and Robs Hall) saw a first and two second places.

The older swimmers, who were slightly depleted put up a good show and were supported by team members swimming up out of age. Josie Rimmer, making her gala debut for Woking Under 16, swam in five events and acquitted herself well. Alex Aristidou, returning after a two year layoff also swam well in 4 events.

Swimming in the lane between the two teams of Bracknell and Haslemere, who were the eventual winners and runners up, Woking attained third place which was good reward for yet another encouraging team effort.

After much debate, the award for swimmers of the night was given to Kirsten Panter/Bethany Eastwood and Ben Smith/Alex Aristidou.

The coaches and team manager applauded the team for their spirit and commitment. One parent helper was heard to comment "Woking really are quite well behaved poolside aren't they and they enjoy themselves too." Absolutely.

Next round of the Rother is the 24th September.

Well Done to all swimmers and you will find full results on the notice board.

Premier League Round 2

The 18th June saw two Woking teams in Round 2 of the Premier League. Woking 'A' were at Guildford and Woking 'B' were at home.

Woking 'A' team, ranked 5th in the competition, narrowly missed beating Rushmore into 2nd position by 2 points on the night. However a very creditable 3rd place was achieved by some very good swims from the team. PB's came from Kelly Davidson (2), Dominic Holloway (2), Sarah Noble (2), Jeremy Mulliez (2), Susan Sheil-Rankin, Joanna Blair, Daniel Gibson (2), William Killen, Josh Foulkes, Amy Edmonds, Sam Holloway and Bethany Eastwood. 31 first to third places and a convincing win in the final event, the squadron, capped an exciting evening.

Swimmers of the night were Amy Edmonds and Dominic Holloway.

Woking "B" team also had an equally good performance and achieved 3rd place on the night. 30 first to third places with PB's being achieved by Anna Marks, Harry Blackmore, Nicola Britton-Williams, Sophie Phillipson, Amelia Rosenberg, Jack Bousfield, Katie Gilkes, Andrew O'Donnell (3), Catherine Campbell, Katie Brown, Sam Rumball, Sarah Hall, Matt Dickenson, Niall Johnson, Natasha Holden (2), James Watson and Catherine Taylor.

Swimmers of the night were Natasha Holden and Andrew O'Donnell.

Between the two teams 38 new PB's were set; all the coaches were highly delighted that the swimmers were putting their practice to good use and that they enjoyed the two fixtures.

Thanks must also go to all the technical officials, both old and new who had to staff an away as well as a home gala.

A number of children were unable to swim, two of whom played a critical part in Pyrford C of E School's silver and a bronze position in the Bazuka Primary Schools National Relay Finals held in Sheffield. Well done Clare & Emma Maurer.

SCASA Weekends of 4th & 11th June 2005

The last two weekends of the SCASA Youth Championships, held at Crystal Palace, saw two of Woking's swimmers performing.

On Saturday 4th June, both Amy Edmonds (U11) and Becky Harding (U12) swam in the 200 Breaststroke, with Becky qualifying for the finals in a time of 3.01.52, just short of an NQT by 1.4 seconds. Amy swam hers in 3.11.13 and returned the following day for the 100 Freestyle and the 200 Individual Medley (where she achieved a PB of 2.56.98).

On Sunday 12th June both girls were again in action in the 100 Breaststroke, swimming themselves into their respective finals. Becky once more came tantalisingly close to an NQT, missing by just 0.54 of a second but qualifying 4th for the final with a PB. Amy also qualified 5th for the final with a PB of 1.28.30.

Both girls, as we all are at WSC, should be very proud of their achievements.

Minor League Winners

Going into the second round of the Minor League, Woking were 39 points ahead of the opposition. By the end of the night Woking were ahead by another 65 points and this secured the Minor League Cup for 2005.

On their way to lifting the cup during the second round, two club records were broken by Nic Smith (in the 100 IM Open) and Becky Harding (in the 50 U15 Breaststroke). Nic broke his own record, whilst Becky took one that had stood for just over 10 years previously held by Ilsa Kikkert.

Once more team unity and enthusiasm shone and a further 23 PB's were forthcoming during the course of the gala. These were for Clare Maurer and Emma Maurer (both of whom are swimming for Pyrford Church of England Primary School in the Bazuka National Finals in June - go girls!), Naomi Thrower, Ross Arnfield, Becky Harding (3), Nic Smith, William Killen (2), Alex Miller, Daniel Gibson (3), Kirsten Panter, Shelley Eastwood (2), Robert Taylor, Katherine Robbings, Chloe Bard (2), Annie McGraw, all beat their PB's.

Swimmers of the night:  Chloë Bard and Alex Miller.

Of the 11 relays swum, Woking won 8. Every swimmer swam a good, solid race and the starts and the relay takeovers were very impressive.

Southern Counties

The 15th May saw the Under 12 Relay Teams in action at Crystal Palace at the Southern Counties. The girls Medley and Freestyle Team, made up of Sarah Noble, Rebecca Harding, Joanna Blair and Amy Edmonds, swam beyond expectations and improved their entry rankings by two places in the Freestyle, attaining 11th position and by five places in the Medley, achieving a very good 5th position.

The boys Medley team of John Hargan, Sam Holloway, Daniel Gibson and Jeremy Mulliez achieved 9th position (ranked 18th) and the Freestyle team of Matt Dickenson, Andrew O'Donnell, Jeremy Mulliez and Daniel Gibson also achieved 9th (ranked 17th). The swimmers split times were all important and the team spirit shown was exceptional. All the swims were improvements on the entry times.

The entire Relay Team squad also stayed on for the Boys 400 IM held in the afternoon, to support Josh Foulkes, aged 10, who swam himself into 6th position.

Round 1 of the Rother League

All this followed on from another solid performance at Round 1 of the Rother League at Basingstoke on the previous night of the 14th May.

Coming up against Basingstoke, Isle of Wight, Sutton & Cheam, Fareham Nomads and Rushmoor Royals, Woking took an early lead and never lost it.

25 first positions, with a further 17 second and third places out of a total of 51 events, ensured the team won with a margin of 52 points. With so many good swims from Opens to the Under 11's and a number of impressive PB's it was once more a truly impressive individual and team performance.

Swimmers of the night were Dominic Holloway and Sophie Phillipson.

Special mention should be made of Emma Davis, who swam having just completed a triathlon that morning!

Round 2 is on the 25th June.

It was truly a team performance with poolside support right from race 1. The coaches and team manager were hard pressed to single out any individual for Swimmer of the Night as the whole team were impressive; therefore the whole team were made Swimmers of the Night.

A number of Woking Swimmers went to this meeting and came away with a very good tally of PB's - 45 in all...and no DQ's!!

The two day meet was well attended by teams as far afield as Jersey and the Isle of Wight, as well as other clubs from Surrey, Hampshire, West Sussex and Buckinghamshire.

H&SC Oct04 1.jpg (46317 bytes)

Woking SC, swimming at home in Pool in the Park emerged victorious as champions after the second round of the Hants & South Coast Junior Cup. Having won the first round in September away at Havant & Waterlooville, Woking were host to the other first round winners.

There were some great individual performances from all swimmers and Charlie Cope and Becky Harding were awarded "swimmers of the night". The entire team however knew they were on target for the trophy and were firing well. The team were awesome in the relays and the crowd were on their feet for the final squadron swim, which Woking won. The team cheer at the end was something else! Woking won with 236 points and Haslemere (the previous cup holders) with 213 points.

H&SC Oct04 (2).jpg (87683 bytes)

Not to be outdone, the second Woking team went to Guildford Spectrum and came out with some excellent individual and team performances. The entire team swam their hearts out with James Styles and Caroline Steel being made "swimmers of the night". William Killen, Jonny Deans and Emily England deserve a special mention for their swims.

Crawley 2/3rd November

PB's abound at this meet (56)!

Crawley Oct04.jpg (70567 bytes)

18 children travelled over the two days to compete at the Crawley Level 2 Licenced Meet. This was a good test of stamina, endurance and concentration over two days worth of events, swimming everything from 50's to 400 F/C and IM.

Nearly everyone notched up a PB with Daniel Gibson getting 7 PB's out of 8 events. Many of the other swimmers also achieved more than one PB, results will be displayed on the noticeboard.

Five 3rd places, five 2nd places and two 1st places were the additional rewards to the PB's.

Great weekend (but tiring!)

Head Coach
The Club is still actively looking for a new head coach. We have interviewed several candidates this term, but feel they were not the right fit for Woking Swimming Club. Our latest advertisement went out this month.

Training Sessions
At present, the existing coaches are covering all training sessions. We feel we are in a very strong position having such a dedicated and committed team of professionals.

Squad sessions remain basically the same this term. We have re-allocated some extra pool time to Piranhas as this is running as a large squad this term.

Seniors
We hope you like the variety of coaches you have had this term! Any style you particularly like? We appreciate you hanging in there!

Gallery Murmurs
Any time anyone has a question, query, (or even a compliment!) please contact one of us! Jungle drums always get distorted so come straight to the horse's mouth!
