Emma Davis

The Roll of Honour board that is usually in the gallery next to the notice board is currently being repaired. However, the Committee is delighted to add another deserving swimmer to the list.

Emma Davis joined Woking SC as a 6 year old Associate in 1992 and has been a valuable A team swimmer throughout all her years as a Full Member.

We are delighted that Emma has continued to swim at galas for WSC whenever her commitments allow.

For her loyalty and length of service Emma Davis has been added to the Roll of Honour in 2006. click here for full citation

Christmas Disco 2006

Fun Night 2006

Sunday 10th December saw Pool in the Park taken over by a motley crew of many colours.

With the sounds of Christmas ringing in their ears, the whole club shook off the rigours of the past few weeks of Club Champs and threw themselves (some literally) into the annual WSC Fun Night.

Following a serious moment to award some well-deserved awards and to add Emma Davis to the WSC Roll of Honour, both pools gave way to complete mayhem. Your correspondent and most of the spectators in the gallery spent two hours completely bemused by the various events devised by the coaches.

The six teams took it in turns to confound the referee with their abuse of the rules as they fought for final honours of the night.

Early on, John Eastwood's Black team took the lead, much to John's amazement. Then the Yellow team took honours as the best dressed team of the night.

The scoring system remained a complete mystery to all but a few elves, who were clearly open to all forms of bribery and blatant flattery.

Things took a nasty turn as the Yellow coach was 'yellow carded' for a blatant foul of stopping the black team mid race and was sent off pool side (although a very similar-looking fellow re-emerged under a poor disguise).

In the end the Green team emerged as winners to everyone's amazement and applause, as they had the smallest swimmers of the night (or so I'm told).

The Associates looked on in amazement from the training pool, wondering where their future lay.

Eventually everyone left for a well deserved break after a long season

Happy Christmas to all and looking forward to a great New Year for WSC.

Speedo Round 3 - 9th December

What a great 3rd Round competition WSC had in this year's National Speedo Swimming League South at Horsham!

Woking were in =1st place with Staines and Black Lion and knew that a great performance was needed - a performance to top the two wins they had gained in the first two rounds. Staines took first place almost from the start with the second place being closely fought over between Woking and Black Lion.

Woking swimmers were delighted with 3rd place in Division 1 East. Club Captains Nic Smith and Anna-Marie McGraw were presented with the 3rd place pennant.

Emma Davis and Nic Smith lead the way with Open IM swims and the Relay teams had great success with 10 out of 16 relays in first to third positions - 5 of those first. With great swims from all the swimmers, a further 5 PB's were achieved on the night. The 13/Under Boys team of Andrew O'Donnell, Jeremy Mulliez, Kyle Fleischer, John Hargen and Daniel Gibson were named Boys swimmers of the night for their performance. Katherine Robbings notched up 2 PB's with some determined swimming in the 50 Frontcrawl and the 50 Back and was named Girl's swimmer of the night.

Head Coach, John Eastwood, said "I couldn't have been prouder of all the Woking swimmers who fought right up to the last race and then, with true sportsmanship as they do in all galas, applauded all the other teams. Last year Woking finished 8th and to have improved by a massive 5 places indicates that the training schedules, work ethic and ethos are all coming together. We have a good stepping stone for the future and this puts us in a very good position for next year's Speedo League."

Well done to all of you.

Woking got off to a fantastic start following the IM's with wins for both Girls and Boys 9-11 Freestyle teams and both the Under 13 Medley teams, who also won their Freestyle relays as well. The Girls U15 Freestyle team also notched up an exciting win and the Medley team came a very close second.

Crystal Palace

WSC swimmers visited the Crystal Palace complex at the end of September for a weekend of pool training and a session on core stability, together with a fun night on the Saturday.

This year we were fortunate enough to be able to book the entire 8 lanes for the 4 two-hour swimming sessions and were therefore able to take more swimmers than the previous year. Also WSC booked a personal trainer for the Sunday land session and rather than conduct gym work, WSC were entertained by a talk and an interactive demonstration on core stability.

Kaye Hargan organised the coach for the travel and the weekend was "patrolled" by John & Karen Eastwood, Janet Bayfield, Julie Todd, Jean Styles, Jules Burvill, Simon Johnson, Tom Nethercott, Chris Hall and Pauline Holohan.

The swimmers and helpers really enjoyed the weekend and the buzz was electric following the training camp.

Lane prizes for the best performer in each lane were awarded to:

Hannah Burvill
Anna Chapman
Callum Ferguson
Katie Brown
Halldora Thorsteins
Matthew Dickenson
Andrew O'Donnell
Kim Glazier

and an overall prize for the swimmer who put the most all round effort of training, attitude and helpfulness was awarded to:

Sophie Phillipson

The Team Prize for the most points awarded over the weekend was awarded to the Blue Team.

The coaches all agreed that the squad that trained the hardest was the Tiger Sharks.

Next years venue still to be agreed but we will have a similar training camp in 2007.

Speedo Round 1

Woking Swimming Club hosted the first Round of the Speedo at Pool in the Park on Saturday 14th October. Facing tough competition from Kent clubs including Sevenoaks, Dover and Orpington, Woking were aware that they needed to pull ahead early if they were to win the gala.

Kim Glazier and Nic Smith responded with two fast Open Individual Medleys. The relay teams followed suit winning 5 out of the 8 opening relay events. It was becoming clear that it was going to be an exciting meet as Sevenoaks went head to head with Woking over the next 20 events.

Younger swimmers Katherine Robbings (10 -11 age group) did a storming 50m backstroke 37.61 secs to take second place whilst Emma Maurer and Dominic Holloway took first place for their 50m Breaststroke events. Sam Rumball in both his 50m Butterfly and 50m Freestyle events achieved second and third place respectively.

After 20 events Woking began to take the lead but they could not afford to relax as Sevenoaks were determined to claw back the points. U13 Becky Harding 50m Breaststroke and John Hargan, 50m Backstroke, produced two brilliant swims to win their events, whilst U13’s Daniel Gibson and Jo Blair came second and third respectively for their 100m Fly. U15’s Bethany Eastwood 100m Backstroke, Kim Glazier and Ross Arnfield 100m Freestyle all won their events whilst in the Open age group Catherine Taylor and Alex Smith both achieved personal bests.

Swimmers of the night were awarded to Catherine Taylor and Kyle Fleischer for their contribution throughout the gala.

The gala concluded with an exciting race between Sevenoaks, White Darts and Woking as six Open swimmers battled it out in the Men’s Open Freestyle relay. Woking narrowly lost out but won the gala overall with 225 points. Team Manager Olive Carroll said, “the whole team had shown tremendous spirit and were looking forward to the second round in Dover.”

Junior Cup Round 2 - 7th October 2006

The A Team had a short journey to Bracknell for the concluding round of the 2006 Junior Cup and it turned out to be a very competitive evening.

The team came a creditable third and during the course of the evening 2 Club Records were broken and no less than 15 PB's set.

Becky Harding got the team well under way with a PB in the U14 100 Breast which also saw the U14 and U16 Club records go again. (Becky had broken her own times that she set in the third round of the Rother League 2 weekends ago). She also achieved a PB in the U14 100 IM.

PB's followed from James Styles (U14 100 Breast, knocking 2 seconds off), Chloe Bard (U13 50 Breast), Emma Day and Dominic Holloway (U11 25 Fly), Kathryn Robbings (U12 50 Fly), Sam Rumball (U12 50 Fly), Daniel West (U11 50 Back), Jo Blair (U14 100 Fly, knocking a massive 3 seconds off her previous time), George Hatfield (U12 50 Breast), Amy Edmonds (U14 100 Free), Clare Maurer (U13 50 Fly), William Killen (U12 50 Back) and Sarah Noble (U14 100 Back).

The entire team fought hard and swimmers of the night were awarded to Sam Tucker and Jo Blair. Coaches John & Karen Eastwood and Team Manager Olive Carroll were full of praise for the team

As last year's Division 4 Champions, the fact that the team had managed to qualify for the final round of this year's competition in Division 2 was an achievement in itself. The whole team swam rose to the challenge and on a night where the lead changed hands frequently throughout the evening the team finished a very credible 4th.

Winners Alton, piped Basingstoke A by 3 points at the end of the evening. The team fought for every race and every point and performed brilliantly with 19 PB's on the night.

Woking do Rother well!

Following on from their victory in the Junior Cup Woking were in fine spirits as once again they played host to Bracknell, Haslemere, Alton “A”, Elmbridge and Sutton & Cheam in the final round of the Rother League held on 23rd September. It soon became clear that Woking faced the toughest competition from Bracknell and Haslemere.

During the evening over 15 PB ‘s were achieved including two fantastic swims from 14 yr old Ross Arnfield for his U16 100m Breaststroke and 100m Freestyle events and James Styles who took off almost 2 seconds from his PB for his U14 50m Breaststroke.13 yr old John Hargan fought hard to take first for his 50m Backstroke, whilst Kim Glazier achieved second place for both her U16 100m IM (Individual Medley) and U16 100m Freestyle events. 16 yr old Alex Smith achieved a 58.93 sec PB for his 100m freestyle whilst younger swimmers Sam Rumball, Dominic Holloway, Catherine Robbings and Emma Maurer all performed brilliantly achieving PB’s.

Becky Harding achieved a PB in the 100m Breaststroke and in doing so broke the Club Under 14 and Under 16 Records.

Emma and Sam were nominated as the swimmers who had performed the best over the three rounds.

As the evening wore on Bracknell appeared to be pulling away but the relay races closed the gap as Woking’s U12 and U14 teams stormed to victory. The three horse race continued until the final event of the evening, the squadron relay, when Woking after several exciting lengths was narrowly beaten to take third place. The Masters relay team, which followed on from this event but was non points scoring was cheered on by both parents and swimmers, included Emma Davies and coach Tom Nethercott plus two parents Brian Robbings and Catherine Ferguson who enthusiastically took up the challenge to win the Masters cup.

The final points tally left Woking in third position with 221 points. Swimmers of the night were Ross Arnfield and Becky Harding.

Hants & South Coast Junior Cup

What a great start to the Winter Term!

Both Woking “A” and Woking “B” Teams had an exciting and successful evening on Saturday 9th as Woking were hosts at Pool in the Park for the first round of the Junior Cup.

As last year’s Division 4 Champions and newly promoted to Division 3, Woking “B” knew they had to get as many points on the table to take forward to round 2. The team all swam brilliantly and had a magnificent tussle with Locksheath all the way through the 51 event competition.

Locksheath however held on to take second place by 2 points with Woking “B” just in third. The team fought for every race and every point and performed brilliantly. The gallery were kept on the edge of their seats right up to the squadron relay with the closeness of the results.

The team notched up 23 PB’s on the night and 38 first to third positions.
PB’s came from:
Lauren Mooney (100 Breast & 100 F/C U14), Lucy Troman and Alistair Koh (50 Breast U13), Anna Chapman and Robert Hall (50 Fly U12), Sam Holloway (100 IM & 100 Fly U14), Caroline Steel (50 F/C U12), Helen Steel & Oliver Kenworthy (50 Back U11), Natasha Holden (50 F/C U12, Becky Spiller (100 Fly U14), Kate Cole (50 Back U13), Misha Blair & Nick Heath (50 F/C U11), Susan Sheil-Rankin & George Hatfield (50 Breast U12), Matt Dickenson (100 F/C & 100 Back U14), Katie Brown & Benjy Clarke (50 Fly U13), Anna Marks (50 Breast U11) and Catherine Jamieson (50 Back U12).

The entire team were made Swimmers of the Night.

Commenting on the team, Coaches, Karen Eastwood and Julie Todd and Team Manager Jean Styles, said that they could not have asked for a better fighting performance. The “B” Team travels to Southampton for the second round clash on the 7th October.

Away from this momentous tussle and swimming in Lane 6, furthest away from the gallery, Woking “A”, the League Cup Holders were quietly (?!) and effectively winning the gala - coming first in 38 out of the 51 events, with 16 out of 17 relays being won!

With a fantastic all round performance, Coaches, John Eastwood and Tom Nethercott and Team Manager Olive Carroll decided that the team also all deserved to be Swimmers of the Night.

PB’s came from:

Halldora Thorsteins (50 Breast U13), Emma Day & Dominic Holloway (25 Fly U11), Callum Thomas (50 Fly U12), Daniel Gibson (100 IM U14), Sam Rumball (50 F/C U12), Hannah Burvill & Sam Tucker (50 F/C U11), and Sarah Noble (100 Back U14).

The “A” Team travel to Bracknell for Round 2 on the 7th October.

Points were as follows:

Woking “A” 237
Locksheath 156
Woking “B” 154
Wandsworth 118
Portsmouth 96
