The gala saw Woking and Staines vying for first place Staines eventually pulling away to win by 7 points. Overall, Woking finished 8th in Division 1 of the 2005 League.

Woking's swimmers of the night were Chloe Bard and Alex Smith.

At the end of the evening, Team Manager Olive Carroll told all the swimmers she was delighted with the way they swum and the great team spirit they showed.
As Olive said, in all her time with the club, she has never known us to swim all three rounds at home so finally I would like to thank all of the parents who helped to run these events.

Help Wanted !

We are desperate for parent helpers, when your child is swimming at a training pool. We just don't have enough volunteers on the rotas. Normally you do not have to do anything - just be there in case a coach needs you for an emergency i.e if a child feels unwell and needs to sit on poolside etc. Typically you can put your feet up and read a book!

Please sign up for your child's squad or contact Kim - helpers@wokingsc.co.uk

Congratulations to them all and good luck with the practical exams in February!

Also thank you to Linda Edmonds for all the effort involved in getting the 'willing' volunteers on the courses, and to all the WSC qualified officials who gave their help and advice to the trainees along the way.

Woking Swimming Club has an excellent reputation for hosting galas and providing officials at 'away' events and without an ever-expanding team of qualified officials, this would not be possible.

If you are interested in getting more involved and providing valuable help, please email us helpers@wokingsc.co.uk and watch this space for details of further courses in April 2006.

15th October - Woking Swimming Club sent out two teams for the final round of the Hants and South Coast Junior Cup and came away with not only the cup for the League Championship, but also the cup for the 4th Division Championship.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch in Woking , the A Team, supported by coaches Karen Eastwood and Julie Todd, were defending the Championship Trophy!

After a steady start, the A team knew that they had a battle on their hands with Haslemere with the lead swapping between the two teams all the way through. After 40 events the Woking team switched into adrenaline overdrive details popup click here and started to extend a lead which saw them win the gala by 10 points.

40 1st to 3rd places were achieved with the Under 13 Boys and Girls relays achieving 1st places in all events, together with the Boys U11 and U12 Medley Relays. The Squadron event was a foregone conclusion, with a 1st place as a reward.

Click Here for all the details

Speedo League Round 1

15 PB's heralded the start of the Speedo League Round 1 for Woking. Swimming at Pool in the Park, Woking were host to Orpington, Erith, 1066, Croydon and Guildford (who were the eventual winners on the night).

Following a really successful and enjoyable weekend training camp at Crystal Palace (see separate report), Woking were on form but minus a number of older swimmers, including the Boys Captain, Chris Bett, who damaged his ankle on the weekend. Get well soon Chris, Round 2 is soon!

The first PB was from Kirsten Panter, swimming up in the first race of the evening, the Girls Open IM with a 3 second improvement. Ruth Tweedie-Smith followed with a PB in the 10/11 Girls 50 Backstroke. Becky Harding (1 second in the 13/U 100 Breaststroke), Shelley Eastwood (15/U 100 Back) Amy Edmonds (Open 100 Fly, swimming up with a fantastic 6 second PB and a 2 second in the U 100 Freestyle), Chloe Bard ( 10/11 50 Fly and 10/11 50 Free), Jo Blair (swimming up in the 15/U 100 Fly with a 2 second PB), Clare Maurer (10/11 50 Breast) and Rebecca Merritt (15/U 100 Breast).

For the boys, Daniel Gibson attained a 3 second PB in the 13/U Breast and a 2 second PB in the 13/U 100 Fly, William Killen (1 second in 10/11 50 Breast) and Alex Smith (1 second in the 15/U 100 Free - come on Alex you're nearly there for a sub 60!).

Good 1st place swims from 6 of the relay teams (out of 16 Relays) and also from Becky Harding, Shelley Eastwood, Chloe Bard and Alex Miller added to a good overall performance for which Woking should be proud at achieving.

Woking were in 4th place with swimmers of the night going to Shelley Eastwood and Alex Miller. Well done to all the team; the coaches and team manager are proud of you all!

Round 2 is on the 12th November, also at Pool in the Park. Parents, come and support your children and Woking!

Rother District Round 3

Woking Pool in the Park was the venue for the last round of the Rother League held on the 24th September.

The home team were host to Haslemere, Bracknell, Rushmore, Alton and Hart and put in a fighting performance to claim third place in Division 1.

During the course of the evening, many of the first and second places went to the stronger teams of Haslemere and Bracknell who were the eventual winners and runners up, however Woking team's enjoyment of participation was not dulled in any way with PB's being set by Rebecca Merritt (U16 100 Breast), Ross Arnfield (U16 100 Breast), Chloe Bard (U12 50 Free), Alex Smith (U16 IM and U16 100 Free), Bethany Eastwood (U14 50 Back), Charlie Cope (U14 50 Back) and William Killen (U12 50 Back).

The relay squads all put in a good performance and that, together with some very creditable individual swims, bodes well for the future performance of WSC."

HSC Junior Cup

On the 10 September Woking had two teams out to swim galas in the first round of the HSC Junior Cup.

Woking ‘B’ team travelled to Bracknell in fighting spirit to face stiff opposition from mainly ‘A’ teams Haslemere, Bracknell, Guildford and Hamble. They knew that the evening was going to be a battle, and went out to gain as many PB’s as possible – and that’s exactly what they did!

After a storming win and PB from Lauren Mooney in the 50m BRS, the PB’s just kept on coming – 21 in all!. Among those who battled for a PB were James Stock, Alana Thomas, Katie Brown, Sam Rumball, James Watson, Alistair Koh, Becky Spiller, Alex Campbell, Sarah Hall, Catherine Campbell, Max Dakin, Sam Cogan, Anna Marks, David Joseph, Jack Bousfield and Emily England, with James Styles and Lucy Troman gaining PB’s in two of their swims.

Well done swimmers, and our congratulations go to the winners Haslemere, closely followed into second place by Bracknell.

Swimmers of the night were Lauren Mooney and David Joseph for their excellent swims.

Meanwhile, the Woking 'A' team travelled to Basingstoke, and collected 13 PB's and 46 first to third places in a 52 event gala.

Impressive performances came from all swimmers with some swimming up an age group. Swimmers of the night were Sarah Noble and Alex Miller for some exceptional swims. PB's were forthcoming from Daniel West, Daniel Gibson (2), Andrew O'Donnell (2, with one of them being a 6 second PB on 100 F/C), Chloe Bard, Alex Miller (with a 5 second PB on 50 F/C), Sarah Noble, Matt Dickenson (2), Katherine Robbings, Kirsten Panter and Bethany Eastwood.

The whole team were fired up and were soon in overall first place – a position which never changed for the rest of the gala. This lead was extended throughout the gala all the way to the squadron, which they won with a very comfortable margin. For those parents who made the journey and for those who were helping poolside, the spectacle and noise of the evening culminated in the loudest squadron cheer heard for many a long year!.

Points were:

  • Woking 207
  • Havant & Waterlooville 157
  • Basingstoke 155
  • Wey Valley 131
  • Bognor Regis 93

The second and final round will be held on 15th October, so put the dates in your diaries and come and support your team.

Crystal Palace Summer School

In August, 45 keen and committed Woking swimmers had some holiday fun by invading the Crystal Palace Summer School en-masse to regain some of their swim-fitness. Daily we travelled from Pool In the Park up to the famous 50 metre 8-lane pool by coach, the hour- long journey giving us all a welcome chance to catch up on each other’s news and gossip.

Once there it was a quick change, and into the water for the older swimmers for an hour and a half coaching session followed by a brief snack break, whilst the youngest swimmers saved their energy for the last hour and a half of teaching sessions.
The swimmers soon settled into the rhythm of the swimming, and steadily progressed up through the lanes, tackling harder sets as the week whizzed by – although the attempted stampede for the Diving Pit needed to be seen to be believed! It was fairly obvious how much the swimmers were enjoying themselves when it was discovered that one group had managed to persuade their teacher that all the girls names were ‘Becky’ due to some clever deployment of named hats, and the boy’s names – well you’ll have to ask them!

Each day some very tired and hungry swimmers returned to the coach for the journey home – but the tiredness didn’t last long. Once the team had been fed and watered the singing started – and be assured that our swimmers have very powerful sets of lungs. DJ Otzi’s ‘Hey Baby’ took on a whole new meaning!

To protect their ears and sanity, the more mature members of the party brought out their secret weapons – ‘A Bug’s Life’ and ‘A Cinderella Story’, and peace fell throughout. The team were so engrossed that they begged the coach-driver to go round a few roundabouts twice so that they could see the end of the film!

The swimmers were a pleasure to be with, and their manners and work ethic were commended time after time. Thank you to each and every one of you.
A huge thank-you also to John, Jean, Janet, Sarah, Jules and Simon for all their help – without them the week would not have been possible.

All that is left for me to say is – next year's dates for your diaries are

MONDAY 31 JULY – FRIDAY 4 AUGUST
