Woking perform in Surrey County Championships

The ladies led the way for Woking Swimming Club during the first two weekends of the Surreys.

On day one, Anna Maine won a gold medal in the 200m Backstroke, whilst achieving her first qualifying time for the South East Regional championships. Charlotte George also won a gold medal and improved on her regional qualifying time in the same event.

Despite missing out on a medal in this event Hannah Burvill improved her personal best by over 5 seconds. This earned her a Club Record in the U14 age group and means she is only 1.5 seconds off a National Qualifying Time, whilst Hazel Ferguson was a tantalising 0.12 seconds off her SER time.

After a close fought battle, Charlotte won her second gold medal in the 100m IM.

Day two brought a silver medal and three more club records for Hannah when she claimed the U14, U16 & Open record for the 400m freestyle, with Charlotte obtaining a SER qualifying time in the event.

Not to be outdone by the girls, James Chambers swam a 7 second PB in the 200 Backstroke, leaving him needing a further 2 second improvement to achieve his first regional time.

Hannah achieved her final SER qualifying time of the weekend in the 200m Breaststroke.

Overall, Woking swimmers achieved 24 PB’s.

The second weekend of the championships, held at Aldershot Garrison Pool resulted in six more club records and two NQT’s for Hannah Burvill. These were achieved in the 1500 metres and the 800 metres Freestyle in which she won a silver and gold respectively. Hannah has now achieved entry into three events at the National Championships in Sheffield which are held in July. Katherine Robbings also swam in both events and achieved two silver medals.

With two more weekends of the Surrey County Championships all the swimmers are determined to continue their good performances and with the Bournemouth Open coming up after Easter to improve on these.

Speeding Tickets at the Pavilions

Woking Swimming Club attended Cranleigh B Grade Open Meet which was held at Pavilions in the Park at Horsham and came away with a medal haul of 15 Gold, 9 Silver and 9 Bronze, along with a handful of Speeding Tickets.

The Speeding Tickets were awarded to those swimmers who were too fast for the upper time limit. James Chambers must have really had the foot down as he came away with a personal tally of 4! Kristian Payne, Mariano Lines, Tara de Klerk, Lucy Maurer, Alex Zalaf and Thomas Webb also picked up one each.

Out of the 100 swims, 59 were new personal bests and the following picked up medals:

Gold: Amy Harrington(4), Maya Hartwell (3), Michael Sugden (2), Lucy Spruzs (2), Alex Warren (1), Alex Watson (1), Lucy Maurer (1) and Natasha Holden (1).

Silver: Natasha Holden, Lucy Maurer, Lucy Spruzs, Jasmin Monteiro, Kristian Payne, Alex Zalaf, Thomas Webb, Robyn Hartwell and Emily Cheshire all picked up a silver each.

Bronze: Amy Kearney (2), with Alex Warren, Alex Zalaf, Rhiannon Mellor, Jasmine Holden, Natasha Holden, Sophie Ledsome and Emily Faulkner picking up a bronze each.

Of the visiting clubs, WSC came 3rd.

At the double for the Gemini Trophy

The fine recent form of Woking’s swimmers continued on Saturday night as they retained their Gemini trophy title for the fourth year in succession. With the gala clashing with a national schools event in Coventry and facing stiff opposition from Hamble and Hart, a true team performance was needed in a gala that uniquely requires two lanes to be filled by all competing clubs, with the points from both lanes being combined to decide which club would be the overall winner. Regardless of which lane they were asked to race in, the swimmers rallied to the task and after a close, hard fought battle with Hart, they emerged as the victors.

The recent deluge of PBs continued in the first eight events, with ten from a total of sixteen races. Throughout the night, there would be a grand total of thirty six new personal milestones in all, with twenty coming from the first thirty two races – a good omen with the Surrey County Championships just round the corner. Despite the best efforts of Emma Maurer (50m breaststroke), Calum Ferguson (50m backstroke), Dominic Holloway (50m breaststroke), Alex Miller (50m breaststroke), Charlie Bridgwater (50m breaststroke), Charlotte George (50m backstroke) and Hannah Burvill (50m backstroke), who all won their respective races, Hart raced into an early lead, with Woking determinedly hanging on in second place. The relays proved fruitful, however, and with the help of victories from the Mixed U/12 4x25m freestyle relay and Mixed U/14 4x25m medley relay teams Woking were soon hunting down the leaders.

The gap continued to close as the individual events recommenced. Haaris Wyne took the next victory for Woking in his 50m butterfly, and this was followed by further triumphs from Charlotte (50m freestyle and 25m butterfly), Hannah (50m freestyle and 50m butterfly), Daniel West (50m freestyle), Hazel Ferguson (50m backstroke and 50m freestyle), Calum (50m butterfly), Alex (50m freestyle) and Chloe Bard (50m freestyle). With ten races to go, Woking edged into the lead for the first time in the gala as Hart looked to be unable to sustain their early pace. It was a lead they would go on to extend through the final set of relays, as first place finishes from the Mixed U/12 4x25m medley relay, the Mixed U/14 4x25m freestyle relay and the Squadron relay teams ensured that the Gemini trophy would be staying at Pool in the Park for another year.

Swimmers of the night were Alex Miller and James Cumins for the boys and Chloe Bard and Hazel Ferguson for the girls.

Points were:

Woking 404
Hart 377
Hamble 281

Swimmers Under Development

Woking's swimmers can begin their Surrey County Championship preparations in earnest after another set of superb performances brought the curtain down on the second half of the Surrey Development meet. With a string of PBs and Surrey Qualifying Times achieved, they can now look ahead to what promises to be an exciting few months of racing action.

With eight PB's from the first eight swims, the Woking contingent looked to be in fine fettle. Ella Woods notched an SQT in the Girls 200m IM in addition to her new personal milestone, and further PBs followed from Ellie Galloway (Girls 200m IM), Matthew Aubry, Davis Taylor, Kristian Payne, Michael Sugden and Cameron Helsby (Boys 100m IM). The girls then claimed a second SQT of the day, this one going to Phoebe Lenton in the Girls 100m freestyle.

Elizabeth Jamieson bagged SQT number three in the Girls 100m backstroke, as well as a new PB, and Ellie added a second PB to her days total in the same race. Not to be outdone, the Woking boys responded, with Alex Miller taking an SQT in his 100m breaststroke. New PB's promptly followed in the 200m IM from Haaris Wyne, Elliott Taylor, James Cumins and Alex again.

Ella then showed her qualities as a sprinter as well as a distance swimmer, gaining an SQT in the Girls 100m IM to go with her 200m time from earlier in the day. Lucy Spruzs also gained a PB time in the 100 IM event. Three PB's and two SQTs were achieved as the day came to a close, with James Chambers (Boys 100m freestyle) and James Cumins (Boys 100m backstroke) the swimmers beating the required entry times.

The final PB of the weekend came from Flynn Parker in his Boys 100m freestyle event.

With only a few weeks left to go, Woking's swimmers will now be focussing on their final preparations for the main championships themselves, beginning with a gala in a weeks time.

Hannah is a National QT!

When Hannah Burvill turned 12 at the beginning of last September the date she really had in mind was the first of the following month. If she were to make the National Age Group Championship finals she would need to record the necessary qualifying time sometime after the 1st October 2009 and ahead of the actual championships at the end of July 2010.

The task is not an easy one, NQTs are only obtained by roughly 1% of the competitive swimming population.

Having come so close during the course of last year, the focus event for this year was the 100m Free. The required times? Either 1:03.84 (Long Course – i.e. swum in a 50m pool) or 1:02.48 (Short Course – i.e. swum in a 25m pool).

The marker was set at the end of November with a short course time at the Woking Club Championships of 1:05.02 this was followed a week later with a 1:04.03 at the Level 2 Haslemere Elite meet. In December Hannah travelled to Millfield school in Somerset for the Plymouth Leander Level 1 Long Course meet. Competing against some of the very best in the country she recorded 1:04.97, agonisingly just over a second off the required time.

Battling through the snow in January and without the normal training preparation Hannah clocked a short course 1:03.18 at the Level 2 Brighton Meet, this time just under a second off the required time.

Last weekend with the weather now allowing a full training programme Hannah travelled to Portsmouth for their Level 1 Long Course Junior meet. This was held at the new Mountbatten Centre where a £20 million investment has created a state of the art 50m pool that will serve as a pre-games training camp for the 2012 Olympics. Swimming in the eight lane pool with reaction time measurement off the blocks, Hannah touched home in 1:03.54 and so gained that much coveted NQT, a fantastic achievement. Adding to this success she returned from the meet with four individual Golds and a bronze.

Having qualified, Hannah will now be looking to better her entry time and potentially add further NQTs from the events of the forthcoming Surrey County Championships. The National Age Group Championships take place at Ponds Forge, Sheffield from 28th July 2010 and the club and coaches wish Hannah every success as she represents the club on the National stage.

Swimmers on the Wey up

Woking’s junior swimmers provided some very encouraging signs of things to come in the Wey B Junior League round one. The competition, in which the races are time limited in order to provide the opportunity for B team swimmers to represent the club, produced nineteen PBs over the course of the night, with Woking finishing the gala in a narrow second to Isle of Wight. It was a fine performance from the team, particularly from those swimmers representing the club for the first time.

The result of the time limiting rule was that a number of swimmers swam a Time Penalty – essentially meaning that they were too quick for the event. Speed demons of the night were Maya Hartwell (25m butterfly and 50m freestyle), Kristian Payne (50m breaststroke), Dominic Ascough (50m breaststroke and 50m freestyle) and Alex Zalaf (25m butterfly). Dominic also picked up the Swimmer of the Night accolade for the boys, with Megan Fidge nominated for the girls.

PBs came from Charlotte Weller (50m backstroke), Max Longhurst (50m backstroke), Megan (50m breaststroke), Alex Zalaf (50m breaststroke and 50m backstroke), Davis Taylor (50m butterfly), Ana Richardson (50m breaststroke), Dominic (50m breaststroke and 50m freestyle), Tara de Klerk (50m freestyle), Elliott Taylor (50m freestyle), William Hurman (50m backstroke), Ben Haskell (50m breaststroke and 50m butterfly), Maya Hartwell (50m freestyle), Robyn Hartwell (50m backstroke), Jack Pearce (50m backstroke), Kristian Payne (50m breaststroke) and Alex Warren (50m butterfly).

Isle of Wight – 156 points
Woking – 151 points
Teddington – 146 points
Dorking – 136 points
St Pauls Barnes – 132 points
Chichester – 117 points

Swimmers Developing Fast

Woking’s swimmers enjoyed a successful start to 2010, despite having their training hampered by the extreme weather conditions. At the Surrey Development Meet, designed to give competitors a last chance to gain vital Surrey Championship qualifying times, a series of fine swims led to thirty PB’s from seventy two races and, most importantly, sixteen new qualifying times came from thirteen first place finishes, ten second places and four thirds.

Perhaps most pleasingly for the coaches, five of these came from swimmers who previously had not achieved QT’s for the 2010 Championships.

Alex Miller profited most from the weekend’s exertions, gaining two Surrey QT’s from three swims (50m breaststroke and 50m freestyle). Other QT’s came from Cameron Helsby, Kristian Payne, Sophie Ledsome and Flynn Parker (50m backstroke), Tara de Klerk, Holly Gardiner, Ella Wood and Daniel West (50m breaststroke), Ewan Smith, Charlie Bridgwater, Ailish Straver and Lucy Spruzs (50m freestyle), Haaris Wyne (50m butterfly) and James Chambers (200m freestyle).

There were still several other PB’s that, while not quite fast enough to be Surrey QT’s, nevertheless still represented an impressive improvement so early in the term. New milestones were achieved by Matthew Aubry (50m breaststroke), James Chambers (50m butterfly), Max Dorrell (50m freestyle), Hazel Ferguson (50m breaststroke), Ella Fowden (50m breaststroke), Matthew Grady (50m backstroke), Amanda Jack (50m breaststroke), Elizabeth Jamieson (50m butterfly), Edward Lee (50m breaststroke), Flynn Parker (50m freestyle), Michael Sugden (50m breaststroke), Davis Taylor (50m freestyle), Alexandra Warren (50m freestyle), Thomas Webb (50m backstroke and breaststroke) and Saara Wyne (50m backstroke).

The second Development Meet takes place on Saturday 30th January at the Spectrum where once again a number of Woking swimmers will be hunting those prized Surrey QT’s. The Surreys themselves kick off on Saturday February 20th.
