Haslemere Summer Open

Roger Federer wasn’t the only one breaking records last weekend, two club records fell as thirty four Woking Swimming Club swimmers attended the new format two-day Haslemere Summer Open Meet. The U12 Girls 200m Back record fell to 11 years old Hannah Burvill after she romped home in 2:40.58, almost 6.5 seconds ahead of the 2nd place finisher on the day. This swim was enough to take the top single swim award for the 11 year old girls, making it three-peat for Hannah having walked off with top swim in her age group for the previous two years at this event.

Amy Edmonds (15) then took the Club U16 400m Freestyle record when she clocked 4:46.26 leaving only the 800m and 1500m in the Clubs U16 Freestyle record books without her name against them.

131 individual swims across the weekend yielded 56 PBs with 13 Golds, 19 Silvers and 15 Bronze medals giving the club an overall 7th place for the meet.

Burvill contributed four Gold (200 Back, 400 Free, 100 Back, 200 Free), three Silver (50 Fly, 200 IM, 100 free) and a Bronze (50 Back), finishing in the top 3 in all but one of her nine swims. Team mate Kirsty McKnight finished no lower than second in her four swims (Gold in 50 Fly, 200 IM, 50 Free and Silver in the 100 Breast) pipping Burvill and giving the club one-two finishes in both the 50m Fly and 200 IM events. Bethany Eastwood (Gold 50 and 100 Back, Silver 50 Fly and Bronze 100 Free) and Dominic Holloway (Gold 100 and 200 Back, Silver 50, 100 and 200 Breast and 50 Fly) also managed top three finishes in all but one of their swims.

11 years old Chris Zahn had to settle for 2nd place behind the same Haslemere swimmer in each of the 50, 100 and 200 Breaststoke events.

At the younger end of the club in the 9 years old Emma Hassanein came away with 5 medals (Gold 50 Breast, Silver 200 Breast, Bronze 50 Fly, 200 Back and 200 IM) with Anna Maine contributing Silver in the 50 Fly in the same age group.

Other medal winners were Sam Holloway (Silver 50 and 200 Breast and Bronze in the 100 Breast), Silvers for Charlotte George (50 Fly, 50 Free) and Kristian Payne (50 Back) with Bronzes for Alex Campbell (100 and 200 Breast), William Hurman (50 Back and 50 Breast), Katie Shiel-Rankin (400 Free), Catherine Campbell (50 Breast), Phoebe Lenton (200 Free), Amy Harrington (50 Back) and Christophe Gilson (50 Free)

Rother Junior Trophy

Woking Swimming Club successfully defended the Rother Junior Trophy by the narrowest of margins and in almost identical fashion to the event last year. Female swimmer of the night, nine years old Charlotte George opened proceedings with a blistering win in the 50m Freestyle and would later go on to win the 50m Backstoke breaking the existing U10 club record by almost half a second. A total of seventeen PBs were recorded on the night, with Kirsty McKnight contributing to this with the second win of the night in the U12 50m Backstoke. Calum Ferguson provided the 3rd win of the night from the first 10 races in the U14 50m Fly. Woking then proceeded to dominate the first set of Medley Relays with three more wins out of the five events from the 9 years old, U11 and U12 teams.

Nine years old Ed Lee scored another win and PB in his 50m Backstroke event with Hannah Burvill taking top spot in the U12 50m Fly. At this stage there was nothing between Staines and Woking and these two teams started to edge away from Elmbridge, Sutton & Cheam, Worthing and Alton. More wins from Charlotte George (25m Fly), Kirsty McKnight (50m Breast), Chris Zahn (U12 50m Breast) and Andrew Roy (U11 50m Backstroke) couldn’t break the deadlock neither could another three wins from the five Freestyle relay events again from the 9 years old, U11 and U12 teams. With the evening drawing to a close Woking’s points total was further fuelled by wins and PBs from 9 years old Emma Hassanein (50m Breaststroke) and Ben Kenworthy (U11 50m Fly) with another win from Hannah Burvill (50m Free).

In the final individual event of the night 11 years old Chris Zahn swam up an age group finishing a credible 3rd in the U13 50m Breaststoke giving him male swimmer of the night. Woking now had 217 points to Staines 223 and with only the squadron to go and with a possible 6 points on offer an overall win looked impossible.

Undeterred the ten Woking squadron swimmers swimming in ascending girl/boy age order scorched to a convincing first place in a time of 2:30.44. When the result was announced it transpired that Staines had unfortunately been disqualified in the squadron and the points were now level. The result of the squadron relay is taken as the tiebreaker and this meant Woking retained the cup they won last year which was also decided on the squadron result when Woking and Staines had again finished on equal points.

Final points:

Woking 223
Staines 223
Elmbridge 186
Sutton & Cheam 166
Worthing 161
Alton 95

Swimmers of the Night: Charlotte George and Chris Zahn

South East Age Group Regional Championships

Six Woking swimmers recently took part in the ASA South East Regional Age Group Championships for swimmers aged 10 to 14 years old. This is a long course (50m pool) event held over two weekends at K2 in Crawley. The competition was extremely tough this year and although twelve Woking swimmers had achieved Regional consideration Qualification Times only automatic QTs were accepted for entry.

Hannah Burvill finished in grand style with a superb PB and 4th place finish in the 11 years old 200m Freestyle final. Her finals time of 2:25.59 was agonisingly just outside a National Qualification Time for this event. Burvill finished in the top ten in all but one of her seven swims (including another PB in the 200m IM), giving her an 11th place overall in the BAGCAT tables. Top ten finishes were achieved by Kirsty McKnight in each of her four swims (PBs in 100m and 200m Backstroke and 200m Breaststroke) and Ben Kenworthy in his three swims (PBs in the 100m Backstroke and 200m IM).

Calum Ferguson gained an impressive 4th place finish in the Boys 13 years old 100m Butterfly and not to be outdone, his sister Hazel finished in the top ten for the 10 years old 100m Backstroke achieving PBs in both this and the 200m Backstroke. Further solid performances from Dominic Holloway gave him an overall 14th place in the BAGCAT tables, just one place behind his team mate Calum.

Cranleigh Summer Open Meet

The sun wasn’t the only thing shining as Woking swimmers attended one of their favourite fixtures, the Cranleigh Summer Open Meet.

42 individual swimmers completed 124 individual swims amassing 32 Gold, 20 Silver and 17 Bronze medals.

53 Personal Best times were recorded with Amanda Jack (9 years old), Chris Zahn (11 years old) and Daniel West (13 years old) gaining PBs in every event they entered.

Ross Arnfield (17 years old) headed the medal table with 7 Golds, 2 Silvers and 3 Bronzes. Mens Club Captain Alex Smith (18 years old) brought home 6 medals (4 Gold, Silver and Bronze) and Ladies vice-captain Amy Edmonds (15 years old) won both her age group and the open events for both the 50m Backstroke and 400m Freestyle. Similarly Emma Maurer (14 years old) achieved medal finishes in both age group and open events impressively taking the Open gold in the 50m breaststroke. Katherine Robbings (14 years old) also gained medal finishes in both age group and open categories for all four of her swims.

Woking achieved four one-two finishes in the following events:

  • 10 years old Girls 50m Breaststoke from Robyn Hartwell and Hazel Ferguson
  • 11 years old Boys 200m Backstroke from Chris Zahn and Flynn Parker
  • Open 200m Freestyle from Alex Smith and Ross Arnfield

Woking dominated the 200m Backstroke with 3rd place from 9 years old Sophie Ledsome, 1st place from 10 years old Hazel Ferguson, 1st place from 11 years old Lucy Maurer and topped off by the one-two finish from 14 years old Emma Maurer and Katherine Robbings.

Other medal winners were, Alex Warren, Ben Smith, Charlotte George, Ed Lee, Filippo Carrozzo, Haaris Wyne, James Watson, Kristian Payne and Tara De klerk.

Surrey Youth Games

Twelve swimmers from the club in school years 5 and 6 and who either live or school in Woking Borough and had not competed at County or Regional level represented the Borough in the swimming event for the recent Surrey Youth Games.

Competing against six other local Boroughs, the team comprised:

Year 5 (U10) - Alex Harding, Jack Pearce, Fraser Tattersdill, Lucy Spruzs, Robyn Hartwell, Lauren Simmons, Ella Wood

Year 6 (U11) - Robert Ash, Alex Watson, (James Chambers unable to compete due to illness), Rhiannon Meller, Georgina Walton, Zoe Whytehead

After ten events of tight competition, victories from Robyn Hartwell (Yr 6 50m Breast) and the Yr 5 Medley relay team placed Woking in joint 4th with Spelthorne behind Elmbridge, Guildford and Epsom. First placed finishes in both of the Yr 5 25m fly events from Fraser Tattersdill and Lucy Spruzs left Woking clear in 4th place having moved ahead of Spelthorne. Fraser and Lauren Simmons similarly dominated taking 1st place in their respective Yr 5 50m Backstroke events. Going into the final set of relays Woking were now in 3rd place overall just one point ahead of Elmbridge. Mixed fortunes in the two freestyle relays saw Elmbridge pull back to joint 3rd with only the Squadron to go and the team knew they had to finish ahead of Elmbridge in order to go home with a medal. An impressive 2nd place finish behind the eventual winners Guildford secured 3rd place overall and a well deserved bronze medal.

Overall the top three teams finished:

1. Guildford 112 pts
2. Epsom & Ewell 103 pts
3. Woking 97 pts

Once all the results had been checked and despite an administrative error on the day the Yr 5 swimmers took Gold and the Cup for their age group thanks to their seven 1st place finishes from the ten Yr 5 events ahead of Guildford and Epsom & Ewell.

Well done to all the swimmers and thanks to Irene Holden who managed the team together with helpers Dave Meller and Maria Harding and to Michael and Natasha Holden who helped out on the day as officials.

Woking Do Rother Well

Woking delivered an excellent performance in the second round of the Rother League. The round is unique in that it is a relay gala, meaning that Woking were required to put in a truly team effort. Facing several of the best teams in the region, they did not disappoint.

Woking did not have to wait long for a first victory of the night, with James Cumins and Calum Ferguson triumphing in only the second event of the evening, the Under 14 2x25m Backstroke. This was shortly followed by wins from Hazel Ferguson and Charlotte George in their Under 12 2x25m Freestyle and Haaris Wyne and Ben Kenworthy in their Under 12 2x25m Butterfly. There were also narrow second place finishes from Becky Harding and Amy Edmonds in their Open 2x50m Breaststroke, Ben Kenworthy and James Chambers in their Under 12 2x25m Freestyle and Bethany Eastwood and Amy Edmonds in their Open 2x50m Freestyle. After fourteen events, Woking were narrowly in third place.

The first set of 4x25m relays produced a victory for the Under 14 Boys Freestyle relay team of Dominic Holloway, Oliver Kenworthy, James Cumins and Calum Ferguson, and a string of third place finishes ensured Woking began to pull away from fourth place Staines as the gala passed the halfway mark. Two members of that team, Dominic and Calum, then combined to provide another victory for Woking in their Under 14 2x25m Freestyle. Not long after, the victory tally was added to again by Ben Kenworthy and James Chambers in their Under 12 2x25m Backstroke and by Chloe Bard and Clare Maurer in their Under 16 2x50m Freestyle.

The team saved the best for the last set of 4x25m relays though, with two wins and two second places out of eight races. Triumphs were provided by the Boys Under 14 4x25m Medley relay team and the Girls Under 12 4x25m medley relay team, with the Boys Under 12 Medley relay team and the Girls Under 16 Medley relay teams narrowly finishing second. The final victory of the night came from the Boys Under 14 2x25m Butterfly team of Calum Ferguson and Oliver Kenworthy, and a strong showing in the Squadron relay at the end of the night saw Woking seal an impressive third place finish behind Bracknell and Haslemere.

Swimmers of the night were Calum Ferguson, Clare Maurer and Chloe Bard.

The points were:

Bracknell 234
Haslemere 232
Woking 194
Staines 149
Sutton 130
Worthing 121

The Rother Junior Gala is being held on Saturday 20th June and the final round of the Rother League is on the 19th September.

Swimathon 2009

30 club swimmers made up six teams taking part in Team 5K challenge at the recent National Swimathon in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care. Thanks to their efforts and the generosity of family and friends the teams raised £1,425 in total, beating last year’s total by over £250.

A splashing time was had by all and it was great to see all the swimmers participate and encourage their team mates in the water.

Team Ben, comprising brothers Ben and Alex Smith, Matt Dickenson, Ross Arnfield and “guest” boy Amy Edmonds clocked 1:06.43 for the 5K giving them a 33rd placing in the national results. Had the lanes been slightly less crowded they would have surely gone faster, next year guys!

Team Supathon comprising Natasha Holden, Ellie Galloway, Hannah Burvill, Amy Harrington and Phoebe Lenton clocked 1:21.01, marginally slower than the team made up of Calum Ferguson, Sam Holloway, Chris Zahn, Kelly Davidson and Emma Hassanein who finished in 1:20.46. Both teams finishing in the top 100 national results.

The three teams of younger swimmers put in great performances all faster than the youngest team from last year with teams of:

Jasmine Holden, Alex Warren, Hazel Ferguson, Sophie Ledsome and Elizabeth Jamieson recording 1:32.48

Isabella Embleton, Charlotte George, Charlotte Hawkes, Ed Lee and Harris Wyne in 1:35.37

Kirsten Young, Tara de Klerk, Ella Fowden, Emily Christie and Ella Wood in 1:49.33

Donations can still be made at:

Many thanks to all the parents and helpers that came along and supported the teams and counted off the lengths.

Premier Performance from Hannah

Hannah Burvill and Edward Lee starred as Woking put in a hard fought performance in the final round of the Hants & South Coast Premier League. Hannah broke the Under 12 club record for 50m Backstroke with her first event of the night, a fantastic achievement which also saw her win the race. Shortly beforehand, her fellow swimmer of the night Edward Lee had also taken victory in his Boys 9 Years 50m Freestyle, and it set the tone for what would prove a battling performance from Woking against some excellent opposition, most notably from Haslemere and eventual winners Portsmouth.

With ten events gone, the points were evenly spread across the six teams with Woking lying third, a third victory having come from Calum Ferguson, who won his Under 14 50m Butterfly. Personal best swims came from Sophie Ledsome, James Chambers, Natasha Carr, Elizabeth Jamieson and Charlie Bridgewater. Woking also performed admirably in the first set of relays, with the Girls/Boys 9 Years 4x25m Medley team of Cameron Helsby, Edward Lee, Anna Maine and Sophie Ledsome and the Girls/Boys Under 14 4x25m Medley team of Natasha Carr, Dominic Holloway, Calum Ferguson and Emma Maurer both coming second in their events.

As the gala passed the halfway stage, Woking upped their game still further, and other top two finishes were provided by Hannah Burvill again, winning her Under 12 50m Butterfly in a personal best time, Emma Maurer in her Under 14 Breaststroke, Anna Maine in her Girls 9 Years 25m Butterfly, Kirsty McKnight with a PB in her Under 12 50m Breaststroke and Charlie Bridgewater in his Under 11 50m Backstroke. Other PBs came from James Chambers, Andrew Roy, Phoebe Lenton, Katie Shiel-Rankin and Daniel West as the top three teams began to pull away from the rest. With the Girls/Boys 9 Years relay team continuing to succeed, adding a victory in their 4x25m Freestyle relay to their second place in the Medley earlier in the night, Woking were comfortably secured in third place going into the last ten races.

Hannah Burvill continued to dominate, with a third personal victory of the gala in her Under 12 50m Freestyle after Tom Holwell had come second in his Boys 9 Years 50m Breaststroke. Other second place finishes came from Calum Ferguson in his Boys Under 14 50m Backstroke and Chris Zahn in his Under 13 50m Breaststroke, with PBs from Ailish Straver and Andrew Roy, and Woking finished the night in spectacular fashion by narrowly coming second in the Squadron relay. The team finished third overall.

Minor Performance for Woking

Open swimmers Ross Arnfield and Jo Blair put in stellar performances as Woking’s ‘B’ team finished their Minor League campaign with a nail biting final gala that went right to the wire. Personal Bests were achieved in over half the individual races swum, with twenty three in just forty two races.

The first of these was achieved by Arnfield in his 100m Breaststroke, placing third in his race. First place finishes then followed for Charlotte George and Andrew Roy in their respective Under 11 50m Backstroke swims, and Woking continued an excellent start to the night by recording top three finishes in fourteen of the first fifteen events. Other wins came from Daniel West in his Under 13 50m Freestyle, and Jo Blair in her 100m Freestyle, and eight PBs were attained in just twelve individual events.

After ten events, the gap between Rushmoor and Woking was just two points, and both teams remained neck and neck throughout the entire gala, keeping the watching audience on the edge of their seats. The difference was four points at the twenty event mark, and just five points after forty races. The PBs and top three finishes continued to pour in, with victories for Elizabeth Jamieson in her Under 11 50m Butterfly, Chris Zahn in his Under 13 50m Breaststroke, Andrew Roy in his Under 11 50m Freestyle and Flyn Parker in his Under 12 50m Breaststroke.

The Open swimmers continued to perform superbly, with a hard fought triumph in the 4x50m Freestyle relay thanks to Jo Blair, Ross Arnfield, Becky Harding and Ben Smith. This was swiftly followed by wins from Elizabeth Jamieson in her Under 11 50m Breaststroke and James Chambers in his Under 12 50m Backstroke, and the scores between Rushmoor and Woking were level with only a few races to go. Despite a thrilling squadron victory for Woking, the last leg of which was completed in style by Ben Smith, Woking ‘B’ finished runners up in Division 2. This was a great performance for the team who were in Division 3 last year.

1st Rushmoor 233 points
2nd Woking ‘B’ 226 points
3rd Epsom 186 points
4th Fareham 173 points
5th Gosport 147 points
6th Alton ‘B’ 135 points

South East Region Youth Championships 2009

Alex Smith, Alex Woodman and Amy Edmonds represented Woking at the South East Regional Youth Championships held at Aldershot 50m pool over the early May Bank Holiday weekend.

WSC Ladies Vice-Captain, Amy Edmonds once more was in electric form and achieved 6 club records in her swims over the 2 days.

On the Saturday, her opening event of 50 Fly brought a time of 30.29 breaking the club Under 16 and Open record, previously held by Georgie Fromson. She improved upon this time in the finals with a time of 30.26, beating her previous performance. Amy also reached the finals of the 50 Free with a time of 28.49. In the final she bettered that performance by achieving a time of 28.13. In doing so she broke her own Under 16 and Open record and achieved a National Qualifying time.

In both these events she was awarded Regional Silver medals.

WSC Men’s Captain Alex Smith swam in the 100 Free and narrowly missed out on achieving a PB in a time of 57.46.

On Sunday, Alex Smith swimming in the 50 Fly achieved a PB by setting a time of 28.76 and followed this with a 25.82 in the 50 Free. Not to be outdone, Alex Woodman recorded a PB in the 50 Fly of 28.30, just outside of the club’s Open record held by Neil Hayfield. He then followed this with a 26.62 in the 50 Free. Amy swam in 4 events on Sunday: 100 Breaststroke (1.20.31), 100 Fly (1.09.44) with a 2 second PB, 100 Free (1.02.91) and the 50 Breast (36.69). In the latter she also reached the finals.

The South East Regional Age Group Championships start on the 30th May at Crawley.

Team effort sees Woking through

Woking’s swimmers pulled together to record an excellent team performance in the first round of the Rother League where they faced six other teams including Staines, Fareham ‘B’, Farnham, Cranleigh, Worthing and Seagulls.

The evening had got off to a flying start as swimmers of the night Hazel Ferguson and Charlie Bridgwater won their respective Under 11 50m Backstroke races. This was shortly followed by other victories for Hazel’s brother Calum in his 50m Butterfly (recording a stunning PB in the process), Amy Edmonds, Dominic Holloway, Hannah Burvill and James Cumins. Bridgwater also followed up his earlier success by helping the Under 11 4x25m Freestyle relay team to a deserved triumph, along with Haaris Wyne, Fraser Tattersdill and Edward Lee. The same team would later go on to win their Medley relay as well, and Bridgwater completed a superb night’s work by winning his Under 11 50m Breaststroke.

The points total continued to mount as Woking and Staines began to pull away from the rest of the chasing pack. Hannah Burvill obtained two more 1st place finishes in her Under 13 50m Butterfly and Freestyle, while Emma Hassanein clinched a win and a PB in her Under 11 50m Breaststroke. PB’s were also swum by Open swimmers Ross Arnfield in his 100m IM and Matt Dickenson in his 50m Freestyle, in addition to those already gained by Tia Thurlow, Emma Maurer, Kirsty McKnight, Chris Zahn and Haaris Wyne earlier in the gala.

With a photo finish looming large, Woking gave everything they had to try and hold off Staines in the last set of relays. First place was gained by both Under 11 relay teams, while the Under 15 Boys Freestyle, Under 13 Girls and Under 13 Boys Medley and Open Girls Freestyle relay teams came second. The mixed girls/boys Squadron relay, the last event of the night, also came second.

Woking Turn Up The Heat In Bournemouth

Woking’s swimmers enjoyed another successful weekend down at Bournemouth open meet last week. As well as being an opportunity for PBs and medals, it also provided an excellent warm up for the South East regional championships in two weeks time.

Twenty six swimmers made the journey down, and with the help of some rapid racing placed Woking as the third best visiting club. In the BAGCAT standings nine year olds Charlotte George and Emma Hassanein came 1st and 4th respectively, while eleven year old Hannah Burvill and twelve year old Dominic Holloway also finished top of their age groups. Nineteen gold medals were won over the weekend, with Amy Edmonds (four golds), Charlotte George (six golds), Dominic Holloway (three golds), Emma Hassanein (two golds), Emma Maurer (one gold) and Hannah Burvill (three golds) taking the plaudits.

Team captain Alex Smith followed up breaking the Men’s Open 50m Freestyle club record, making him the fastest swimmer in the club’s illustrious history, by claiming two silvers in his 50m Backstroke and 50m Freestyle. Other silver medals were plundered by Amy Edmonds (three silvers), Dominic Holloway (four silvers), Edward Lee (two silvers), Elizabeth Jamieson (one silver), Emma Hassanein (one silver), Emma Maurer (one silver), Flynn Parker (one silver), Hannah Burvill (one silver) and Sam Holloway (one silver).

Arnfield and Tia Thurlow also managed to achieve South East regional qualifying times for their 50m Freestyles, while Maurer snatched QTs for her 200m Backstroke and Breaststroke. The South East regionals warm up continues this week with a long course meet at Crawley.

Premier League Round 1

Woking Swimming Club continued their busy league gala program, competing in the 1st round of the Hants and South Coast Premier League.

The young team of swimmers, all aged under 14, headed off to the Horizon Leisure Centre in Waterlooville to compete against teams from Basingstoke, Farnham, Gosport, Portsmouth, Winchester and Havant & Waterlooville.

The youngest swimmers got Woking off to the perfect start with convincing wins in both the 9-year old 50m Freestyle races and the U12 50m Backstroke. After ten events Woking were lying in 2nd place behind Portsmouth with Winchester snapping at their heels. A solid batch of Medley relays with top 3 finishes in the 9 year old, U11, U12 and U14 further solidified the position and after 20 events Woking were hanging on to Portsmouth and were clear of the field by some 30 points, a margin maintained through the next 10 events.

The 2nd batch of freestyle relays produced top two finishes from the 9 year old, U12, U14 and U13 teams and by event 40 the gap to 3rd placed Basingstoke was over 60 points with Portsmouth still in sight. In the last series of 10 events Woking finished no worse than 4th and the final Freestyle squadron was won in convincing style.

At the end of the night Woking finished a magnificent 2nd place behind Portsmouth with the gap to the 3rd place now almost 100 points.

Swimmers of the night were Kirsty McKnight and Oliver Kenworthy.

Havant and Waterlooville Open

On Sunday 5th April, twenty eight Woking swimmers took part in the Havant and Waterlooville Level 3 Spring Open Meet, for some of the younger swimmers this was their first experience of an Open Meet. Ninety five individual swims produced 22 top ten finishes. Katherine Shiel-rankin topped the medal table taking Gold in the Girls 9/10yrs 50m Freestyle by a margin of over a second with a time of 35.00 seconds. She then went on to dead-heat for 1st place in the 50m Breaststroke in a time of 49.14 and completed her medal haul by taking Bronze in 50m Butterfly. Bronze also went to Edward Lee in the Boys 9/10yrs 50m Freestyle missing out on silver by just 19/100ths of a second with all four of his swims top ten placed. Natasha Carr finished in the top ten for three out of her four swims, culminating in Silver in the Girls 11/12yr 50m Butterfly with a time of 37.43secs just 3/10ths behind the winner.

Minor League Magic

Woking Swimming Club went to Basingstoke for the first round of the Minor League.

Putting in a great performance and punching well above their weight ,with most of the opposition being A teams, Woking snatched third place which bodes well for the second and final round which is being held on the 9th May.

The mixed Under 11 relay teams, of Kristian Payne, Emma Hassenein, Charlotte George, William Hurman, Haaris Wyne and Hazel Ferguson won both their races convincingly. Kristian Payne and Emma Hassenein went on to win their individual Breaststroke events and Haaris Wyne won his individual Butterfly event.

Matt Dickenson, swimming in the Open 100 metres, finally broke the 60 second barrier with a powerful 59.09 performance.

The entire team swam well with a number of them achieving personal bests. The final squadron relay was the most exciting to watch, with Woking leading for most of the race. Unfortunately a win on this occasion was denied them, but a battling team performance takes them forward to the next round.

Swimmers of the night were the Under 11 Relay Teams, Matt Dickenson and Emma Hassenein.

Wey B Open Meet

Championship Defended for the Fourth Year in Succession

The final round of the Wey B Junior Gala was held at Woking on the 14th March. This gala was dedicated to Rob Smith, a founder member of the league and previous chairman of Woking SC, who sadly passed away in January this year.

Woking’s opening swimmer, Ailish Straver, blasted her way to a five second PB in the Under 11 Back, followed by further PB’s and wins for Keiran Dunne, Robyn Hartwell, Christophe Gilson, Michael Sugden and Lauren McFadden.

The gala was hard fought, with the places changing throughout the course of the evening. The Under 10 girls and boys stormed to win all of their relays and the final event of the evening – the mixed squadron – showed the determination of the home team.

Sophie Ledsome, Fraser Tattersdill, Katie Shiel-Rankin, Christophe Gilson, Emily Smith, Jamie McNicholas, Phoebe Lenton and Daniel West performed a showcase relay to give the Woking team a convincing win which put them in first place overall, with Andover and Ringwood in 2nd and 3rd places.

Over the previous month at Aldershot, Elmbridge and Guildford Spectrum, 56 swimmers from Woking Swimming Club competed in 218 individual swims achieving 118 personal best times. In the process the club more than doubled the 2008 medal haul, bringing home 15 Gold, 11 Silver and 20 Bronze medals and earning them a 6th place finish in the overall club competition, The George Tinlin Trophy, 2 places higher than in 2008.

Head Coach at Woking, John Eastwood said: “I, and the rest of the coaches and team managers are really pleased at the performance of all the swimmers in the Surreys. The amount of PB's gained so soon after Club Champs is the result of a lot of very hard work on all sides. I am also extremely pleased to see that the results have improved, both in medal tally and position in the Tinlin trophy year on year. The attitude of all the swimmers poolside is both exemplary and supportive of their friends and club. WSC parents should be proud of their children.”

12 year old Dominic Holloway and 15 year old Amy Edmonds dominated the Breaststroke, taking Gold in the 50, 100 and 200m events in their respective age groups. Both also struck Gold in the 100IM, with Holloway taking the 200 IM medal too.

Divide And Conquer As Woking Triumph in Gemini

Woking retained their Gemini League crown for the 3rd year in succession on Saturday night with an excellent performance on home territory. Facing Hamble Aquatics and Winchester Penguins, they gave a strong team display that exuded confidence – a promising sign with the Surrey County Championships beginning in earnest this week.

The Gemini League requires each club competing to field two teams, with the club amalgamating the largest combined total being declared the winner. Woking got off to a strong start with personal best swims from Lucy Maurer and Charlie Bridgwater in the Under 11 50m Breaststroke and never looked back. The PB total continued to rise, with significant improvements from Dominic Holloway, Kirsty McKnight, Catherine Campbell, James Watson, Chris Zahn, Tom Marshall, Ben Kenworthy, Andrew Roy, Calum Ferguson, Chloe Bard and Kyle Fleischer. Halfway through the gala after the first round of relays, Woking had assumed a commanding position, leading by 180 points to Hamble’s 153.

Further PBs came from Oliver Kenworthy, Jamie McNicholas, Hazel Ferguson and Lucy Spruzs as the gala progressed, and the trophy was sealed with a one-two finish from Woking’s teams in the freestyle squadron relay, the final event of the night.

Woking: 452

Woking right royally successful at Rushmoor Royals

Nineteen Woking Swimmers attended the first Long Course Open Meet of 2009 staged by Rushmoor Royals at the marvellous Aldershot Garrison pool. For some this was their first experience of an Open Meet at a 50 metre pool.

Sixty-nine individual swims resulted in thirty-three top ten finishes bringing home two golds, one silver and one bronze for their efforts. A number of personal bests were achieved over the course of the 2 days and medals were won by 14 year-old Amy Harrington who struck first winning the 13/14 Age Group 200m freestyle by a margin of almost 2 seconds in a time of 2:32.30.

Wey B Junior League - Defence of Champions

Three times defending champions, Woking Swimming Club met their friendly rivals Dorking, Cheam Barracudas and Staines at Round 1 of the Wey B Junior League Gala held at Woking Pool in the Park on Saturday 17th January ’09. This was a timed gala and selection of the right swimmer for the event swum was critical.

The gala was dedicated to Rob Smith, who very sadly passed away on Monday 5th January. Rob, who until recently was the very well known ‘gentle giant’ in the Surrey Swimming world, and a past Chairman of Woking Swimming Club was instrumental in setting up the Wey B Junior League which allows mainly the ‘B’ and ‘C’ team swimmers to take centre stage.

This gala is the first to showcase the latest batch of youngsters to ‘come of age’. Woking's Under 10’s broke onto the scene in storming form to win all 4 of their relay events. There is a trophy for this event on finals day and Woking have held this trophy for the past 2 years.

All credit to the youngsters – Anna Maine, Amanda Jack, Kirsten Young, Saara Wyne, Ellie Riches, Peter Arnold, Thomas Webb, Ewan Smith, Matthew Aubry and Hantian Wang.

A brilliant 18 PB’s fell through the evening, which is an excellent result this early in the year, and Woking’s strength showed when they came first in 10 out of the 14 relays.

The gala was closely fought, but Woking proved the victors when they won the final event, the Squadron Freestyle Relay. The final results were 1st place Woking, 2nd place Dorking, 3rd place Staines, and 4th place Cheam Barracudas.

Swimmers of the night for Woking were Gabriella Staples-Griffin and Daniel West.

The final round is scheduled for the 14th March.

Haslemere Invitational Heroes

Fourteen WSC swimmers gathered at “The Herons” at Haslemere on Saturday 24th January to try to bring home the Top Club Trophy for the third year running.

The team of determined young swimmers swam their hearts out to achieve an amazing 17 personal bests. Four swimmers excelled by coming first in their races – Kirtsy McKnight in the 50 Breast, Edward Lee in the 50 Back, Haaris Wyne in the 50 Fly and Andrew Roy in the 50 Back.

The rest of the team put in excellent performance and PB’s were also achieved by Ellie Galloway, Chris Zahn, Emma Hassanein, Tom Holwell, Charlie Bridgwater, Betty Jamieson and Katie Shiel-Rankin.

The evening culminated in a very exciting freestyle relay. After a nail biting wait – and several medals – the announcement came that Woking were Top Club!

This is the third year running that Woking has won this trophy, and the fifth time in the last six years.

Woking Swimming Club – 2009 preview

Back in the water after a short break the clubs swimmers are already training hard with a wave of competitions on the horizon.

Last Saturday was the Black Swans Level 3 Open Meet at Staines and Woking showed its strength in depth with some impressive results. Six “Speeding tickets” (where the time achieved is faster than a specified limit time and therefore not eligible for a medal) were obtained by Andrew Roy (50 Free, 100 Back), Flynn Parker and Sophie Ledsome (50 Back), Cameron Helsby and Isabella Embleton (50 Free). Edward Lee brought home two Golds (50 Breast and 50 Fly) in Woking’s total of nine that included Harrison Porter (100 Breast), Natasha Holden (100 Back), Jamie McNicholas and Charlie Bridgwater (200 IM), Sophie Ledsome (50 Free), Andrew Roy (50 Fly) and Isabella Embleton (100 IM). Four Silvers boosted the total with swims from Andrew Roy (100 IM), Cameron Helsby (50 Back), Michael Sugden (200 IM) and Jamie McNicholas (100 Free). Roy featured again taking Bronze in the 50 Breaststroke in a total of six, two from Amy Harrington (50 Breast and 100 Free), Zack Fowden and Natasha Holden (50 Back) and Flynn Parker (100 IM).

Andrew Roy was named as Top Boy in the 10 year olds and Edward Lee came 3rd in the 9 year olds.

This coming weekend is the Rushmoor Royals Long Course Level 3 Meet at Aldershot followed the next Saturday with the Hants and South Coast Invitational Meet at Haslemere, and on Sunday Cranleigh staging their Level 3 Open Meet. The last day of January is the first league fixture of the year with the Hants and South Coast Gemini Trophy being staged at Pool in the Park. Woking will field two teams and compete against Winchester and Hamble Aquatics defending the Division 1 trophy they won in 2008.

All of this activity is geared to the first major milestone of the 2009, the Surrey County Championships. The championships take place throughout February at various venues including Aldershot, Elmbridge and Guildford Spectrum. The club is well represented at these championships with many Woking swimmers having achieved the necessary qualification times for the various age group events.

The year continues with a number of other Open Meet and League fixtures, leading to the South East District competition in May with swimmers targeting qualification times for the National Championships at the end of July.

Rob Smith

Rob Smith sadly passed away unexpectedly on Monday 5th January 2009.

Amongst his many roles at Woking S.C., including Competition Secretary, Wavelength composer and founding member of the Wey B Junior League, Rob Smith was a former Chairman of Woking S.C. and one of the club's greatest supporters. He was also a great friend to many in the swimming world, both inside and outside the club.

All our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Rob's wife Ann and family.
