Congratulations to Anna Maine who was crowned Young Personality of the year at the Sport Woking Awards at a ceremony held on Wednesday 4th October at the HG Wells Conference Centre.
Anna was nominated by the club and fellow swimmers, not only for her phenomenal achievements in swimming this past year but also for the inspiration she brings to her fellow swimmers:
Anna Maine joined Woking Swimming Club when she was around 6 years old, learning the basics of competitive swimming and working her way up steadily through the squads. Anna was talent spotted by British Swimming in 2015 and placed on a Tokyo Podium Potential Programme, where talented swimmers are guided on a path of international competitions and given extra support, with the ultimate goal of medalling for Team GB at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
During the award period, Anna stepped up from being multiple National Champion and Junior British Record holder in 50m backstroke to the international stage, competing for Team GB in both the European and World Junior Championships. At the 2016 European Junior Championships in Hungary, Anna came away with three bronze medals and, as part of a smaller team at the 2017 World Junior Championships in Indianapolis, USA, Anna set personal best times, made two World finals and achieved a best placed finish of 5th in the World in her favoured event, the 50m backstroke. A phenomenal achievement.
Anna’s achievements in swimming have been inspirational to both her fellow club team mates and top Surrey based swimmers aspiring to reach her level. ”Anna is truly inspirational. Anna’s level of commitment to her training, both on land and in the pool, as well as her nutrition and overall dedication has set a fantastic example and encouraged the whole of our top squad to aim high in setting our own swimming goals”.
Anna’s 5th place position at the World Championships was an amazing achievement, especially coming from a small club like Woking. Her achievements have raised the performance of the whole squad and the Woking team, who had another successful year with many medals at both County, Regional and National level.
Please describe Anna in 3 words:
